ELIZABETHAN Link Up finally got their first DeeJays Nightclub League points on the board with a home victory against Methlick.
The game featured one of the more youthful Elizabethan squads in recent years with six of the recent additions listed, several having come from the juvenile ranks.
And it took 15 minutes for the opener to come, a long ball over the top seeing the Methlick defender get caught wrong side of Graeme MCLEMAN who rifled a half-volley across the keeper.
However the game was level shortly after when a couple of errors left Callum Cheyne an unguarded goal to lob the ball into from all of 25 yards.
Link Up managed to get themselves back in front on the half-hour mark when Jack Sutherland was taken down by the rookie keeper who was slow off his line and Aaron MACDONALD fired home the resulting penalty into the right-hand corner.
It didn’t last long though and a lofted pass through the centre split the Elizabethan defence wide open as Martin Sinclair was caught stranded with Stuart Anderson looping the ball over and into the net.
They were certainly avoidable goals to lose from Link Up’s perspective and as has been said before, mistakes in this division will be punished, but the home side recovered to move back in front on 57 minutes.
The Methlick keeper was again culpable as he picked up a back pass, and it was left to MCLEMAN to curl the ball round the ruck of players on the line into the far corner from the indirect free-kick for 3-2.
Sutherland had been a constant menace all evening and had an angled effort just drift wide as Link Up turned the screw in the last quarter, with McLeman then having a chance on the rebound trickle beyond the post after the keeper failed to deal with a through ball.
But it was MCLEMAN who had the final say as he secured his treble 11 minutes from time, Sutherland doing the groundwork by latching onto the ball through, his initial shot had the keeper beaten but ‘G’ made sure from a couple of yards out before any Methlick defender could prevent it crossing the line.
A deserved win for the home side who have now kickstarted their campaign at the fifth time of asking, and can go into the next league game against Bellslea in a fortnight with confidence.
